Thoughts of fall often conjure up memories of specific scents and flavors. (Think apple pie, pumpkin pie, and mulled apple cider.) What makes those delicious scents and flavors? Typically some combination of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, and/or ginger.
To add those scents and flavors into your pies, you can either buy the apple pie and pumpkin pie spice already made up or you can make your own. Here are two recipes for pie seasoning.
1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
Combine all ingredients and store in a sealed jar. (Follow your favorite apple pie recipe for the amount to use.)
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice (optional)
Combine all ingredients and store in sealed jar. (Use as directed in your favorite pumpkin pie recipe.)
